What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students move phrases and clauses to make sentences clearer, more interesting, or better suited to a purpose. They also choose verbs that agree with the true subject.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students consistently match verbs with their true subjects, even when other words come between them. They place phrases and clauses where they add clarity, emphasis, or variety without changing the intended meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may match the verb to the nearest noun instead of the sentence subject. They may also move a phrase or clause in a way that creates confusion or changes the intended meaning.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Revise “The players on the field runs toward the bench when the whistle sounds, exhausted after practice” for agreement and clear emphasis.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups sentence strips for subjects, verbs, phrases, and clauses, then have them build two clear versions with correct agreement.
Ask students to compare two arrangements of one sentence and write which version creates stronger emphasis and why.
Run a sentence repair relay where teams correct agreement and rearrange one phrase or clause before passing the paper.
Have students revise three sentences from a school announcement so the information sounds clear, polished, and engaging when read aloud.
