What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students revise sentence structure by changing where modifiers, dependent clauses, and independent clauses appear. They select an order that makes the meaning clear and creates the intended emphasis or rhythm.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can create several correct versions of a sentence without changing its main meaning. They can explain how each arrangement changes emphasis, rhythm, or reader interest and use correct punctuation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may create fragments or comma splices when they move clauses. They may also misplace modifiers, change the intended meaning, or forget the comma after an opening dependent clause.
How to Assess It
- Give students this sentence: “The players returned to the field because the rain stopped.” Ask them to rearrange it, punctuate it, and explain the change in emphasis.

Ways to Teach It
Cut sentence strips into clauses and modifiers, then have pairs build three correct versions and label the effect of each order.
Write two versions of one sentence, placing the dependent clause first and last, then explain which better emphasizes the main idea.
Play Sentence Switch: teams draw a clause card, reposition it correctly, add needed punctuation, and earn a point for explaining the change.
Revise a school announcement by moving phrases and clauses so the deadline, action, or reason receives the strongest emphasis.
