What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students show when an action happens by changing the action word. They use time clues such as yesterday, today, and tomorrow to choose the right form.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose a verb form that matches a time word or clue. They can write related sentences such as “Mia played yesterday,” “Mia plays today,” and “Mia will play tomorrow.”

Common Misconceptions

Students may write “Yesterday I jump” or “Tomorrow I jumped.” They may also add the past ending after “will,” as in “will jumped.”

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Yesterday Maya ___ (jump). Today Maya ___ (jump). Tomorrow Maya ___ (jump).” Look for “jumped,” “jumps,” and “will jump.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students action cards and time cards. Each student draws one of each, acts it out, and says a matching sentence.

  2. Write three sentences using the same action word, one for yesterday, one for today, and one for tomorrow.

  3. Sort sentence cards under Yesterday, Today, or Tomorrow, then correct any verb that does not match its heading.

  4. Use the class schedule to tell what students practiced yesterday, practice today, and will practice tomorrow.
