What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan and deliver a brief talk about a topic or opinion. They choose relevant details, place them in a clear order, and avoid unnecessary repetition.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students open with a focused topic or claim, present relevant points in a logical order, and finish with a clear closing. Listeners can identify the main idea and supporting details.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list facts without a clear order, repeat ideas, or wander away from the main point. They may confuse being brief with leaving out reasons or evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give students two minutes to prepare a 45-second talk on a school rule. Listen for a clear main point, two ordered details, and a closing.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups mixed index cards labeled opening, claim, evidence, explanation, and closing; students arrange them, then deliver the resulting one-minute talk.
Prompt: Should sixth graders have homework every night? Students write three speaking notes, then present a claim and two ordered reasons.
Play Beat the Buzzer: partners explain a familiar topic in 45 seconds, earning points for an opening, logical order, and closing.
Have students record a 60-second school announcement about an upcoming event, including the purpose, key details, and one clear action for listeners.
