What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan and deliver short presentations alone and with others. They organize ideas clearly, choose only relevant details, and speak in a way that fits the audience and setting.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students state a clear main idea, arrange supporting points logically, and finish within the time limit. They use brief notes, smooth transitions, and direct answers to audience questions. In groups, each speaker supports the same message.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat more information as better information, leading to repetition or unrelated details. They may read slides aloud, skip transitions, or divide group speaking parts without creating a clear shared message.
How to Assess It
- Give students four minutes to prepare a one-minute talk with an opening, two supporting points, and a closing. Ask a partner to state the main message afterward.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups mixed-up presentation cards and have them arrange an opening, supporting points, transitions, and closing before presenting.
Ask students to write three sentences explaining which details belong in a short talk and which should be removed.
Play Cut the Clutter by having teams shorten a wordy script without losing its main idea or key evidence.
Have students create and deliver a 45-second school announcement about an upcoming event for students and families.
