What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan and write focused paragraphs that fit a clear purpose and genre. They state a claim, choose relevant facts, arrange ideas logically, and link sentences and paragraphs. They use precise language and finish with a clear conclusion.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can write a focused paragraph with a clear claim and logically ordered support. Each detail fits the purpose, and transitions connect the ideas smoothly. Precise language, a fitting tone, and a clear conclusion strengthen the message.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list facts without explaining how they support the claim. They may use transitions randomly, shift tone, or add unrelated details. Conclusions often introduce a new reason instead of wrapping up the main point.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Write one paragraph persuading the principal to add ten minutes of recess. Include a clear claim, two supporting facts, transitions, precise word choice, and a conclusion.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs mixed sentence strips from a persuasive paragraph, then have them order the topic sentence, evidence, transitions, and conclusion.
Ask students to compare two school lunch paragraphs and explain which has stronger evidence, clearer tone, and smoother links.
Play Transition Match: students draw two idea cards and choose a transition or prepositional phrase that links them logically.
Have students write to the principal about changing one school routine, using results from a quick class survey as evidence.
