What Students Need to Do

Students plan ideas by talking, sketching, listing, or using a simple organizer. They choose a reader and reason for writing, then create connected sentences with complete ideas, correct verbs, and descriptive words.

What Mastery Looks Like

With support, a student can sketch or organize ideas and create a three-sentence draft for a named reader. Each sentence is complete, stays on topic, uses a matching subject and verb, and includes a clear adjective.

Common Misconceptions

Students may list unrelated sentences instead of staying on one topic. They may write fragments, mismatch subjects and verbs, or add adjectives that do not clearly describe a noun.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Draw a favorite playground activity, then write three sentences about it for a new student. Underline each subject and circle each descriptive adjective.

   Give students picture cards, sticky notes, and a web organizer to plan three details about an animal before drafting sentences.

   Ask, “How would your writing change if you described recess to a friend instead of the principal?”

   Play Sentence Builder by having partners arrange noun, verb, and adjective cards into complete sentences, then check subject and verb agreement.
