What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students state the overall point of an article and the focus of an individual paragraph in their own words. They select details that build each point and explain the connection.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write brief, accurate summaries of a full text and its individual paragraphs. They identify key facts, examples, or explanations and show how those details build the larger points.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy sentences instead of summarizing in their own words. They may list details without stating the larger point. They may include interesting but unrelated facts.
How to Assess It
- Give students a three-paragraph article. Ask them to summarize the whole article and one paragraph, then name two details that support each summary.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups paragraph strips from an article to sort under main idea cards, then have them write a one-sentence summary.
After reading a short article, ask: Which two details best develop the author’s main point, and why?
Play Summary or Detail by reading statement cards aloud while students hold up labeled cards and justify each choice.
Use a school lunch menu article and have students summarize its message for families in two sentences.
