What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify the broader message a story, play, or poem communicates. They write a concise summary and select specific events, choices, or images that develop that message.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student writes a brief, accurate summary that includes the main conflict and outcome but leaves out minor events and opinions. The student states a clear message and explains how two specific details develop it.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name a topic, such as friendship, instead of stating a full message about it. They may retell every event, add personal opinions, or choose a theme based on one detail rather than a pattern.

How to Assess It

Use an exit ticket: Write a three-sentence summary, state one theme as a complete sentence, and list two details that support it.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs six event cards from the reading; have them arrange the plot, remove two minor events, and write a three-sentence summary.

  2. Ask, “What does the text suggest about facing a problem?” Students answer, then point to two choices or outcomes that convey that message.

  3. Play Theme Match: teams pair theme statements with detail cards from three short passages, earning a point only when they explain each match.

  4. Show a two-minute commercial; students summarize its story, state its message, and name two images or actions that communicate that message.
