What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify what each paragraph is mostly saying and determine the main idea of the full text. They summarize in their own words and explain how selected details support each idea.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students state a clear main idea for each paragraph and for the full text. Their summary uses their own words and includes only details that directly support those ideas.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name the topic instead of stating what the author says about it. They may copy whole sentences, include minor facts, or choose details that do not support the main idea.
How to Assess It
- Give students a three-paragraph article and ask them to write each paragraph’s main idea, the whole article’s main idea, and two supporting details.

Ways to Teach It
Cut apart a short article, then have groups match each paragraph to a main-idea card and supporting-detail cards.
Ask students to write one sentence explaining how a chosen detail proves the article’s main idea.
Play Main Idea Match by having pairs sort paragraph cards, main-idea cards, and detail cards into complete sets.
Read a school news article and create a brief morning-announcement summary using the main idea and three supporting details.
