What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the specific focus of a short nonfiction text. They recount the facts that best explain that focus, using their own words. They leave out unrelated or minor information.
What Mastery Looks Like
- After reading, a student can name a focused topic and retell two or three accurate details that support it. The retelling stays faithful to the text and clearly connects the details to the topic.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give a broad subject, such as animals, instead of the text's focus, such as how beavers build dams. They may include opinions or interesting facts that do not explain the focus.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Name what the text is mostly about, then retell three facts that help a reader understand that topic. Check for a focused topic and three accurate, related facts.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a short animal article and fact cards, then have them sort the details under the article's main topic.
Have students discuss this prompt: Name the topic, then retell three facts that help readers understand it.
Play Detail Detective: read four statements from a passage, and students earn a point for choosing each detail that supports the topic.
Read a school lunch menu or weather notice, then have students state its focus and retell two useful details.
