What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students carry out a specific group role, such as facilitator, recorder, timekeeper, or reporter. They complete agreed tasks, contribute useful ideas, and help the group reach a shared goal.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain the role, complete its duties without taking over another person’s job, and meet the deadline. The student listens, checks progress, and steps in appropriately when the group needs help.

Common Misconceptions

Some students think teamwork means one strong reader or writer completes everything. Others confuse doing their role with controlling peers, or they stay silent after finishing one small task.

How to Assess It

Assign each student a role during a five-minute group response to a short passage. Collect a role slip naming the student’s duty, contribution, and evidence of completion.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups shuffled paragraph strips and role cards, then have each student complete one duty as the group rebuilds the text.

  2. Ask students to write: How did your role help the group learn, and what evidence shows you completed it?

  3. Play Role Rotation: groups solve four vocabulary clues, switching facilitator, recorder, checker, and reporter after each clue.

  4. Plan a class event in teams with a chair, note-taker, budget checker, and spokesperson, then compare each member’s contribution.
