What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan group discussions before they begin. They set a clear outcome, choose deadlines or checkpoints, and decide who will handle each task.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students create a specific group goal, set realistic deadlines, and assign roles with clear duties. They track progress and adjust roles or deadlines when the group falls behind.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose vague goals such as “finish the discussion” or assign roles without stating each person’s job. They may set one final due date but miss smaller checkpoints needed to keep the group on track.
How to Assess It
- Give groups five minutes to plan a discussion of a short text. Collect a plan that names one measurable goal, each member’s role, and two deadlines.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a text, role cards, sticky notes, and a timer; have them set one goal, assign roles, and post deadlines.
Ask students to write: Which role helped your group meet its goal, and what should change before the next discussion?
Run a planning relay where teams earn points for creating measurable goals, realistic deadlines, and clear role descriptions.
Have teams plan a school podcast episode, assigning a host, researcher, scriptwriter, editor, and checkpoints before recording.
