What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students take part in paired and small-group discussions, then examine how they contributed. They identify specific actions, judge how the group worked, and plan a better approach.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students name the role they played and cite a specific moment from the discussion. They explain how their actions affected the group and suggest a practical improvement.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat reflection as rating teammates or simply write, "I participated." They may equate talking often with contributing well and overlook listening, inviting peers, and keeping the group focused.
How to Assess It
- After an eight-minute group discussion, ask students to name one action they took, explain its effect, and identify one change for next time.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups role cards and a tally sheet; students discuss a text, rotate roles, then compare how each role affected participation.
Write: What did you do that moved the discussion forward, and what evidence from the conversation supports your answer?
Play Discussion Replay: groups repeat a three-minute talk after choosing one process change, then record whether participation and focus improved.
Run a mock workplace meeting about a school event; students assess how well they clarified tasks, listened, and included each member.
