What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students prepare for group work, contribute useful ideas, and listen closely to different partners. Afterward, they examine their preparation and participation. They identify evidence of their strengths and choose a next step.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students arrive with notes and contribute relevant ideas, questions, and evidence. They listen, include different partners, and describe their own role using specific examples. They set a practical goal for improvement.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think strong participation means talking the most. They often rate themselves without citing evidence. Some overlook preparation, listening, and inviting others into the conversation.
How to Assess It
- After a ten-minute group discussion, collect a three-line reflection: one contribution, one listening move, and one specific goal for next time.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups role cards and sticky notes, then have students record evidence of how each role helped the discussion.
Ask students to write: Which action helped your group most, and what evidence shows its effect?
Play Discussion Move Bingo with squares such as cite evidence, ask a follow-up, connect ideas, and invite a quiet partner.
Have teams hold a mock workplace planning meeting, then complete a brief employee-style self-review of preparation, teamwork, and next steps.
