4.RI.3 is a Standards of Learning standard. These are the knowledge and skills expectations under it.

What Students Need to Do

Students connect what they already know to new information while checking their ideas against the text. They compare sources and explain how events, concepts, or steps relate.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student identifies each source’s focus and supports comparisons with accurate details. The student explains relationships using words such as similarly, before, because, and as a result.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat prior knowledge as proof, even when a text gives different facts. They may summarize each source without comparing them. They may also confuse events that happen in order with events that cause one another.

How to Assess It

Give students two short accounts of the same event. Ask them to name one shared detail, one difference in focus, and one cause or sequence relationship.

   Give pairs mixed event or procedure cards to arrange, then label each link as sequence, comparison, or cause and effect.

   Ask students to write: What did you already know, what was new, and which text detail changed your thinking?

   Play Source Match by having teams sort detail cards under Account A, Account B, or Both, then defend one choice.

   Compare a news article and museum page about a local event, noting which details each source includes or leaves out.
