2.RI.1 is a Standards of Learning standard. These are the knowledge and skills expectations under it.

  Ask and answer literal and inferential questions (who, what, where, when, how, and why) about key details in a text.

  Retell key details of texts that demonstrate an understanding of the main topics of texts.

  Differentiate facts from opinions within a text.

What Students Need to Do

Students identify the main topic and choose details that explain it. They ask and answer direct questions, then use text clues to answer questions that require an inference. They also tell whether statements can be proven or show someone’s belief.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a short nonfiction text, a student names the main topic and retells the most relevant details accurately. The student answers direct and inference questions using text clues. The student sorts statements as facts or opinions and explains each choice.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse the main topic with one interesting detail. They may think every printed statement is a fact, or answer inference questions without using text clues. Retells may include minor details but leave out the central information.

How to Assess It

Give students a short nonfiction paragraph. Ask them to name the topic, write two key details, answer one inference question, and label one statement as fact or opinion.

   Give pairs sentence strips from a short animal article to sort into facts and opinions, then use fact strips to retell the topic.

   Read a paragraph aloud, then ask: What is the topic, which detail matters most, and what can you infer?

   Play Question Toss: students draw who, what, where, when, why, or how cards and answer from a shared text.

4. 04

   Use a grocery advertisement to identify facts, opinions, and the details a shopper needs before choosing an item.
