What Students Need to Do

Students listen to or read a short nonfiction text and use words and pictures to tell who or what it is about. They answer questions using facts from the text and explain simple why or how ideas with support.

What Mastery Looks Like

After a brief read-aloud, a student names the topic and gives two matching details. The student answers who, what, when, where, why, or how questions using words or pictures from the text.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name one interesting fact as the whole topic, or give a topic that is too broad. They may answer from personal experience, guess from the picture alone, or confuse why and how questions with what happened.

How to Assess It

After reading a one-page text about frogs, ask, "What is this page mostly about? Tell one detail that helped you know. Why do frogs stay near water?"

   After a penguin read-aloud, students sort picture cards into matches the topic and does not match, then explain one choice.

   Ask, "What is this book mostly about, and which picture or fact helped you decide?"

   Play Question Cube: roll a cube labeled who, what, when, where, why, and how, then answer about the shared text.

   Read a classroom sign or lunch menu, then ask students what it tells them and which detail helped them know.
