What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students trace how an informational or technical text is organized and explain how that structure shapes its meaning and message. They compare that organization with narrative structure and analyze how repeated or related word choices build attitude and mood.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can label structural moves, cite where they occur, and explain why the author arranged ideas in that order. The student can connect a pattern of words to a precise attitude or mood and support the claim with evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a structure, such as cause and effect, without explaining its impact. They may treat informational texts as having no mood, confuse attitude with topic, or rely on one isolated word. They may also assume every text follows only one structure.
How to Assess It
- Give students a 180-word editorial and a six-sentence narrative on the same issue. Ask them to mark each structure, circle three linked words, and explain how both choices shape the message.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a cut-up technical explanation to reorder, then have them defend how their sequence makes the process clearer or changes emphasis.
Ask students to compare an editorial and a short story on one issue: How does each structure guide readers toward a different message?
Run a word-pattern sort where students group loaded words from a passage, name the shared connotation, and infer the author’s attitude.
Use a product manual and customer review, then trace how organization and diction shape trust, urgency, and expectations for the same product.
