  Use text features (table of contents, headings, pictures, captions, maps, and charts) to preview, set a purpose for reading and gain information.

  Identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain, or describe.

What Students Need to Do

Students preview nonfiction by using headings, pictures, captions, maps, charts, and the table of contents. They use those clues to set a reading goal, find facts, and explain the author's main purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students use several text features to predict content and choose a reason for reading. After reading, they explain the author's purpose and support it with details from the text.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat pictures as decoration or confuse captions with headings. They may name the topic instead of explaining whether the author aims to answer a question, explain an idea, or describe something.

How to Assess It

Give students a one-page nonfiction text. Ask them to circle two useful text features, write one fact each feature provides, and state the author's purpose.

   Give pairs nonfiction books and sticky notes, then have them label a heading, caption, picture, map, chart, and table of contents.

   Ask, “What did the author want you to understand, and which page gives the strongest clue?” Students write two sentences.

   Play Feature Match by pairing cards showing text features with cards explaining how each feature helps a reader.

4. 04

   Examine a zoo map and visitor guide, then identify which features help families find animals, plan routes, and learn facts.
