1.RI.2 is a Standards of Learning standard. These are the knowledge and skills expectations under it.

• 1.RI.2.A

  Identify and use common text features to gain information: table of contents, headings, bolded words, and pictures, captions, and diagrams.

• 1.RI.2.B

  Distinguish between information provided by pictures or other illustrations and information provided by the words in a text.

What Students Need to Do

Students use contents pages, headings, bold print, captions, pictures, and diagrams to find and understand facts. They tell whether each fact comes from written words or a visual.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students quickly choose the right feature to locate or clarify information. They can explain whether a fact came from the written text, a caption, a picture, or a diagram.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat any large word as a heading or any dark word as meaningful bold print. They may credit the words for a fact shown only in a picture. They may read a contents page as part of the story instead of using it to locate sections.

How to Assess It

Give students a short contents page and one nonfiction page with a heading, bold word, caption, and diagram. Ask them to locate a section, then record one fact from print and one from a visual.

   Give pairs a nonfiction book and sticky notes; students label each feature, then record one fact found through two different features.

   Show a diagram and matching paragraph; ask, “What does each source tell us that the other does not?”

3. 03

   Play Feature Hunt: name a purpose, such as finding a section quickly, and students point to the matching feature.

4. 04

   Examine a cereal box, using bold words, pictures, and labels to separate facts shown visually from facts stated in print.
