What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine how a message is built and who is behind it. They judge how well its medium, evidence, tone, and design fit its intended viewers and goal.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can analyze an advertisement, video, podcast, infographic, or post using specific evidence. They can explain whether the source, medium, words, images, and organization suit the intended viewers and goal.

Common Misconceptions

Students often confuse the platform with the message’s goal or assume the audience is everyone. They may judge quality by visual appeal alone or overlook who created and funded the message.

How to Assess It

Display a public service post. Ask students to name its creator, target audience, intended response, and two choices that make it effective or ineffective.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a printed advertisement to label with sticky notes for creator, audience, goal, claims, images, and design choices.

  2. Ask students to explain which would persuade teenagers better, a podcast clip or infographic, and support their choice with two reasons.

  3. Play Audience Swap by assigning each group a new audience and having them redesign one slide from a public service campaign.

  4. Compare two local news posts about the same event, then identify how source and platform shape what each one emphasizes.
