10.RI.3 is a Standards of Learning standard. These are the knowledge and skills expectations under it.

  Evaluate how different authors write about the same topic and shape their presentations or viewpoints of key information using facts, opinions, and reasoning.

• 10.RI.3.B

  Analyze multiple texts addressing the same topic to determine how authors reach similar or different conclusions.

What Students Need to Do

Students compare how two or more authors present the same issue. They identify each author’s facts, opinions, and reasoning, then explain how those choices support similar or different conclusions.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately separate facts, opinions, and reasoning in each text. They compare the authors’ conclusions and explain how selected evidence and reasoning create agreement or disagreement.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat any published claim as a fact or confuse strong wording with strong evidence. They may list differences without explaining how evidence and reasoning lead each author to a conclusion.

How to Assess It

Give students two short passages on school phone rules. Ask them to label one fact and one opinion in each, then explain why the authors reach different conclusions.

   Give pairs two editorials and colored markers to highlight facts, opinions, reasoning, and conclusions, then compare the patterns.

   Ask students to write: Which author makes the stronger case, and which specific evidence and reasoning support your judgment?

   Run an evidence match game where teams connect claim cards to fact, opinion, and reasoning cards from two texts.

4. 04

   Compare two news reports about a local policy and identify how source choices shape each report’s conclusion.
