What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students check the quality and relevance of information before bringing it into a group discussion. They cite sources accurately and help the group use evidence to reach a shared decision or product.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain why a source is credible, identify weak or unrelated evidence, and correct inaccuracies respectfully. The student connects evidence to the group’s goal and records agreed conclusions accurately.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the first source they find as reliable, confuse opinion with evidence, or repeat claims without context. They may collect facts that do not support the group’s goal or dominate instead of evaluating peers’ evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short source excerpts about school start times, one credible and one unsupported. Ask which source a group should use, why, and how it supports a recommendation.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups four printed source cards on one issue, then have them sort by credibility and choose two to support a shared claim.
Ask students to write, then discuss: Which evidence best advances our group’s goal, and what information should we reject?
Play Evidence Relay: teams match claims to source excerpts, flag inaccuracies, and earn a point only when they explain each choice.
Have groups compare two product reviews and one safety report, then agree on a purchase recommendation supported by the strongest evidence.
