What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students judge whether information is relevant, credible, and accurate before using it in a group task. They explain source choices, listen to challenges, and revise claims when evidence changes.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select information that directly supports the group’s goal and verify it against credible sources. They cite evidence accurately, explain its limits, and correct errors during discussion.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat the first relevant source as reliable or confuse strong opinions with accurate evidence. They may share facts without checking context, authorship, date, or agreement across sources.

How to Assess It

Give groups three short sources on one claim and ask them to choose the best source, cite one detail, and explain their choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups printed source cards to sort by relevance, credibility, and accuracy, then require written reasons for each placement.

  2. Ask, “What makes information useful for our task, and when should a group reject a source?”

  3. Run a source challenge where teams earn points for spotting missing context, weak evidence, outdated facts, or unsupported claims.

  4. Have groups compare reports about a local issue, then prepare a two-minute briefing for a mock school board meeting.
