What Students Need to Do: Students share what they know about families, schools, communities, maps, traditions, or leaders. They use drawings, speech, labels, or simple sentences to make their ideas clear.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student gives accurate details that match the social studies topic. The student can explain a drawing, model, label, or sentence so another person understands the idea.
Common Misconceptions: Students may draw a picture without showing or explaining a social studies idea. They may tell an unrelated personal story, copy words they cannot explain, or think only complete sentences count.
How to Assess It: Ask students to draw one way people help at school, add a label, and explain the picture to a partner. Listen for one accurate detail.

Lesson moves

Have students build a block model of the classroom, then point out and explain two places people use together.
Ask, "How does someone help our classroom community?" Students draw an example and dictate or write one sentence.
Play Picture Pass, where students pick a community helper card and give one clue for classmates to guess the job.
Create a class visitor guide with student drawings, labels, and recorded explanations of important places around the school.
