What Students Need to Do: Students organize social studies facts and evidence for a clear purpose and audience. They communicate their ideas through writing, speaking, and visuals such as maps, charts, timelines, or slides.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students make a focused claim, support it with accurate evidence, and arrange ideas in a logical order. Their words and visuals are clear, relevant, and easy for an audience to follow.
Common Misconceptions: Students may copy facts without explaining how they support the main idea. They may crowd slides with text, use visuals as decoration, or read an oral presentation word for word.
How to Assess It: Give students three facts about westward expansion. Ask them to write a claim, choose one supporting visual, and deliver a 30-second explanation.

Lesson moves

Give groups event cards and images from the Texas Revolution, then have them build and present a labeled tabletop timeline.
Ask students to write and share a one-minute response explaining which cause of the Civil War had the greatest impact.
Play Presentation Fix-It by showing weak slides and having teams revise each slide for focus, evidence, and readability.
