What Students Need to Do: Students name customs that families repeat, such as foods, songs, celebrations, or special activities. They tell one way two families are alike and one way they differ.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student describes two family customs using clear details. The student uses words such as same, different, both, or only to compare them respectfully.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think traditions are only holidays or that every family follows the same customs. They may also label an unfamiliar custom as strange or wrong.
How to Assess It: Show pictures of two families marking special occasions in different ways. Ask, “What is one thing they both do, and what is one difference?”

Lesson moves

Have students sort family custom picture cards into a floor Venn diagram labeled both, family one, and family two.
Ask, “What is something your family repeats, and how might another family do it differently?”
Play Same or Different by showing two custom cards and having students hold up matching response cards.
Send home a caregiver interview sheet asking about one repeated family food, song, celebration, or activity, then share responses in class.
