What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students name national patriotic holidays and connect each one to the people or events it honors. They identify customs such as parades, flags, ceremonies, and fireworks.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly match holiday names, pictures, and common customs. They can tell in simple words why one holiday is celebrated.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every holiday includes gifts, costumes, or fireworks. They may confuse Presidents' Day with Independence Day or think Veterans Day celebrates only current soldiers.

How to Assess It

Show pictures of a parade, fireworks, presidents, and veterans. Ask each student to match two pictures to holidays and explain one choice aloud.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs holiday name cards and picture cards to match, then let them place each pair on a class calendar.

  2. Ask, “Which patriotic holiday would you like to attend, and what would you see?” Students draw and dictate one sentence.

  3. Play Holiday Clue Bingo using clues about presidents, veterans, the Constitution, parades, flags, and fireworks.

  4. Examine a local parade flyer or community calendar, then identify the holiday, date, and planned customs.
