What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain what makes an industry grow quickly and what causes it to contract. They track effects on Texas jobs, migration, communities, banks, and government revenue. They also compare cycles across different industries and time periods.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students place major expansions and downturns in order using evidence such as prices, production, employment, or bank failures. They can explain how falling oil prices in the 1980s hurt Texas real estate and banking.

Common Misconceptions

Students often treat a boom as permanent growth and a bust as an industry's complete disappearance. They may mix up cause and effect, assume every Texan was affected equally, or discuss industries as if they operated separately.

How to Assess It

Give students these facts: oil prices rose in 1979, drilling jobs increased, oil prices fell in 1986, and bank failures increased. Ask them to label the boom and bust, then explain one cause and two effects.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have pairs arrange dated industry, price, job, migration, and banking cards into a cause and effect timeline for the 1970s and 1980s oil cycle.

  2. Ask students to write: Who gains during an oil boom, who faces risk, and what changes when prices collapse?

  3. Play cycle match, where teams pair cause cards with boom or bust evidence and earn a point for each accurate explanation.

  4. Students graph Texas home prices or technology employment from a public data table, then mark growth, decline, and effects on local families.
