7.22: Social studies skills. The student communicates in written, oral, and visual forms. The student is expected to:

use effective written communication skills, including proper citations and avoiding plagiarism

What Students Need to Do: Students write about Texas history using their own words. They identify where facts and ideas came from, and use quotation marks when copying exact words.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can paraphrase a source accurately without simply replacing a few words. The student cites quotations, paraphrases, images, and data using the class citation format.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think changing a few words prevents plagiarism. They may list sources at the end but fail to connect citations to specific claims, quotations, images, or data.
How to Assess It: Give students a short source and this prompt: “Write one paraphrased sentence and one direct quotation, then add a citation to each.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs source cards and note cards to match, then have them add quotation marks and citations where needed.
Ask students to write: When does borrowing another person's words become plagiarism, and what should a careful historian do instead?
Run a plagiarism detective game where teams flag copied wording, weak paraphrases, and missing citations, then earn points for corrections.
Have students inspect a local news article and mark how the reporter credits interviews, documents, photographs, and data.
