What Students Need to Do: Students choose a clear central point about a social studies topic. They organize accurate facts and examples around it, then explain the connection in a paragraph and a short talk.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students state a focused point, select relevant evidence, and leave out unrelated facts. Their writing and speaking follow a clear order, with each detail connected to the central point.
Common Misconceptions: Students may name a broad topic instead of making a clear point. They may list facts without explaining connections, repeat the same idea, or include interesting but unrelated details.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Write one central point about today’s social studies topic and add two facts that support it. Then explain your response to a partner in 30 seconds.

Lesson moves

Give groups fact cards about a Texas history topic, then have them sort each card under the point it best supports.
Ask students to answer, “What is the most important idea from today’s lesson, and which two facts prove it?”
Play Evidence Match, where students race to pair central-point cards with accurate supporting-detail cards.
Have students create a short school announcement with one clear message and three facts that help listeners understand it.
