What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose a clear central point about a social studies topic. They select accurate facts, examples, and explanations that support it. They present the point and details clearly in speaking and writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

In a short paragraph or one-minute talk, the student states a focused point and uses two relevant details. The student explains each connection and leaves out unrelated facts.

Common Misconceptions

Students may list facts without stating what those facts show. They may choose interesting details that do not support their central point. Some repeat the central point instead of adding evidence.

How to Assess It

Give students a five-sentence paragraph about the Boston Tea Party. Ask them to write one central point and two supporting facts, then explain their choices to a partner.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups one topic card and six fact cards, then have them build a central-point poster using only three relevant facts.

  2. Ask students, "Which detail best explains why colonists protested British taxes, and how does it support your point?"

  3. Play Detail Match, where teams pair central-point cards with supporting facts and earn a point after explaining each match.

  4. Have students summarize a school announcement for families, stating the key message and two details people need to act on it.
