What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify ways Texas communities preserve language, food, faith, music, celebrations, and family traditions. They explain how those communities also adjust customs and daily life within Texas.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can give accurate examples from several named Texas communities and support them with evidence. The student clearly separates cultural preservation from adaptation while recognizing that both can happen together.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think adaptation means completely giving up a culture. They may treat each group as if all members share identical customs. They may also describe Texas culture as fixed rather than shaped by many communities.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Choose one racial, ethnic, or religious community in Texas. Name one tradition it has preserved, one adaptation, and explain how both can happen together.

Give pairs photo and caption cards about Juneteenth, Czech festivals, Tejano music, and Jewish congregations, then sort each as preserve, adapt, or both.
Write a paragraph answering: Can a community adapt to Texas life without losing its heritage? Support your claim with two examples.
Play Heritage Match: students pair community cards with cards describing language schools, worship spaces, festivals, businesses, or blended music.
