What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify discoveries, inventions, scientists, and inventors that changed societies. They explain why resources, costs, and government choices affect technology use. They predict possible social, political, economic, cultural, and environmental effects of new technology.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can connect a named discovery or invention to specific changes in daily life. They can use evidence to explain why technology spreads unevenly and support a prediction about future effects.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat discoveries and inventions as the same thing or assume one person created a technology alone. They may also assume useful technologies spread everywhere, ignoring cost, resources, laws, and political choices.

How to Assess It

Give students this exit ticket: “Choose one emerging technology. Predict two effects on society, then explain how cost, resources, or government decisions could limit its use.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups cards naming discoveries, inventions, people, and impacts, then have them build and explain matching chains.

  2. Ask students to write: “Should governments limit artificial intelligence use, and what social or economic effects could follow?”

  3. Play a scenario sort where teams label each barrier to technology use as resource, economic, or political.

  4. Have students compare local internet access maps and service prices, then explain why access differs across nearby communities.
