What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify how institutions continue operating across generations, such as recruiting members, training leaders, collecting funds, enforcing rules, and passing on traditions. They explain how specific actions help an institution survive or adapt.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can examine a case study and connect an institution’s actions to its long-term survival. They support each connection with evidence and distinguish adaptation from simply preserving old practices.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse an institution’s purpose with the methods it uses to survive. They may also assume institutions remain unchanged, or that traditions alone can sustain them without members, leadership, resources, and adaptation.

How to Assess It

Give students a short case about a school, government, or religious institution. Ask them to name two survival strategies and explain how each supports continuity.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups institution cards and strategy cards, then have them match funding, leadership, recruitment, rules, traditions, and adaptation to each institution.

  2. Ask students to write which matters more for an institution’s survival, preserving traditions or adapting to change, using two examples.

  3. Play Institution Survival Challenge, where teams choose three strategy cards to respond to problems such as lost funding, declining membership, or leadership change.

  4. Examine how a local library sustains itself through taxes, volunteers, programs, technology, and community support, then rank those efforts by impact.
