What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify four kinds of institutions found in societies: government, economic, educational, and religious. They classify examples by the main role each institution serves.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly sort examples such as courts, markets, schools, and places of worship. They can name the institution type and briefly explain their choice.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think an institution must be a building or a single organization. They may also confuse government with economics because governments collect taxes and regulate trade.
How to Assess It
- Give students four examples: a city council, a bank, a public school, and a mosque. Have them label each institution type and explain one answer.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups picture cards of courts, stores, schools, and worship communities, then have them sort the cards under four institution labels.
Ask students to write which institution handles laws, trade, learning, or shared beliefs, then compare answers with a partner.
Play four corners by reading an example aloud while students move to the government, economic, educational, or religious corner.
Use a local map or community website to find and label one nearby example of each institution type.
