What Students Need to Do: Students identify how each country selects leaders, divides power, makes laws, and involves citizens. They compare these features using accurate examples and evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can complete a comparison chart for China, Germany, India, and Russia without relying only on labels. They can explain how written structures and actual government practices may differ.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume every president has the same powers or that every federal system works alike. They may confuse economic systems with government systems or treat written rules as proof of actual practice.
How to Assess It: Give an exit ticket asking students to compare Germany and China in leader selection, lawmaking, and citizen participation. Require one similarity and two differences.

Lesson moves

Give pairs leader, legislature, court, and citizen cards for four countries, then have them build and label government flowcharts.
Ask students to write: Which two governments are most alike in structure, and where does their actual operation differ?
Play Government Match with country, leader-selection, lawmaking, regional-power, and citizen-role cards; teams earn points by explaining each match.
Display one recent policy headline from each country and have students identify the institution that made, approved, or enforced the decision.
