What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students trace how British war debt led Parliament to tax the colonies. They explain how protests, boycotts, and the Boston Tea Party increased conflict with Britain.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students place key events in order and connect each cause to a reasonable effect. They support their explanation with details about taxation, representation, and colonial resistance.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the Boston Tea Party caused the taxes or that every colonist supported resistance. They may also confuse the French and Indian War with the Revolutionary War.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket asking: Why did Britain tax the colonies, and how did colonists respond? Require one cause and two specific effects.

Ways to Teach It
Have groups arrange war, debt, tax, protest, and punishment cards, then connect them with string to build a cause and effect chain.
Ask students to write whether destroying the tea was a justified protest, using two facts from the lesson.
Play Cause or Effect by reading event cards while students hold up C or E and explain each choice.
Present a new school fee created without student input, then compare likely student reactions with colonial responses to British taxes.
