What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain when and where European groups explored and built settlements in North America. They connect settlement choices to religious freedom, trade, land, and profit, then describe how key colonial leaders shaped communities.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can place major settlements on a map and timeline and explain why each was founded. They accurately connect Bradford, Hutchinson, Penn, Smith, and Williams to their colonies, beliefs, actions, and accomplishments.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat exploration, colonization, and settlement as the same action or assume every colony had the same purpose. They may confuse colonial leaders, especially Hutchinson and Williams, or assume religious freedom included all faiths equally.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank colonial map and five leader cards. Ask them to place three leaders, name each settlement or colony, and write its main motive.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a map, date cards, motive cards, and leader cards to build a colonial settlement timeline from St. Augustine forward.
Ask students to write which motive, religious freedom or economic gain, most shaped one colony, using two facts as evidence.
Play a leader matching game where students connect Bradford, Hutchinson, Penn, Smith, and Williams to actions, colonies, and motives.
Have groups create a recruitment poster for a colony, advertising its location, work opportunities, religious policies, and risks.
