What Students Need to Do: Students connect military action, forts, railroads, and buffalo destruction to changes in Native life on the Southern Plains. They explain effects on land, movement, food, shelter, trade, and culture.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students build clear cause-and-effect chains using accurate details. They explain how several connected pressures forced many Comanche, Kiowa, and other Plains peoples onto reservations and disrupted traditional lifeways.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think forts protected Native communities or that railroads only provided transportation. They may also think buffalo disappeared naturally, or that every Native nation had the same experience.
How to Assess It: Give students a four-row exit chart labeled war, forts, railroads, and buffalo destruction. For each row, have them write one effect and explain why it occurred.

Lesson moves

Have groups arrange picture and fact cards into cause-and-effect chains, then explain how each chain changed daily life on the Southern Plains.
Ask students to write: Which change most affected Native families, and what evidence supports your answer?
Play a matching game with cause cards and effect cards, requiring students to defend each match before keeping the pair.
Compare an 1870s railroad map with Native hunting lands, then mark where new travel routes increased settlement and pressure on buffalo herds.
