What Students Need to Do
- Students explain why conflict grew between many Texas settlers and the Mexican government. They build a timeline and explain how key decisions, battles, and civilian actions shaped Texas independence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly connect the declaration, the Alamo, the Runaway Scrape, and San Jacinto using dates and evidence. They explain both immediate results and longer effects, including the creation of the Republic of Texas.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often call the Alamo a Texas victory because its defenders became heroes, although Mexican forces won the battle. They may treat the Runaway Scrape as a battle rather than a civilian evacuation. Some assume Mexico accepted Texas independence immediately after San Jacinto.
How to Assess It
- Give students four dated event cards and ask them to place each on a timeline. Under each card, they write one cause or effect tied to that event.
