What Students Need to Do: Students explain how events in Spanish Texas, including the Gutiérrez-Magee expedition and Battle of Medina, connected Texas to Mexico’s fight against Spain. They trace how Mexican independence moved Texas from Spanish rule to Mexican rule and shaped later settlement.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can place the 1810 uprising, the 1813 Battle of Medina, and Mexican independence in 1821 in order. The student can explain how independence changed Texas politically and led to increased colonization.
Common Misconceptions: Students often confuse this conflict with the Texas Revolution or the Mexican-American War. They may think Texas was already a U.S. state, or that Mexican independence made Texas an independent country.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: In three sentences, name one event that occurred in Texas during Mexico’s fight for independence and explain one later effect on Texas.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a blank map to label Spanish Texas, Mexico, San Antonio, and the Battle of Medina, then add arrows showing troop movement.
Ask students to write: How did Mexico’s independence change who governed Texas and who was encouraged to settle there?
Have teams sequence event cards from 1810 to 1821, then earn points by explaining each event’s connection to Texas.
Use a current Texas map to locate San Antonio and the Medina River, then connect those places to events from 1813.
