What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students distinguish the jobs of two major Texas documents. They explain how one justified separation from Mexico and how the other sets rules, limits government, and protects rights.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly connect the Declaration to grievances and independence. They connect the Constitution to state government, citizen rights, and laws that still guide Texas.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the Texas Declaration with the United States Declaration or think it created the state government. They may also think the Constitution is a list of ordinary laws.
How to Assess It
- Give students a two-column exit ticket labeled Declaration and Constitution. Ask them to write each document’s purpose and one reason it matters.

Give pairs purpose, grievance, right, and government-power cards to sort under Declaration or Constitution, then require a spoken reason for each choice.
Ask students to write: Which document would Texans need during a rebellion, and which would they need after gaining independence? Explain why.
