What Students Need to Do: Students learn the official words and order of the Texas state song. They perform it from memory by singing or speaking clearly, with the class or alone.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student completes the song without a lyric sheet and keeps the verses in the correct order. The words are accurate, and minor pauses do not stop the performance.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse the state song with the Texas pledge or the national anthem. They may memorize the refrain but skip a verse, reverse lines, or replace unfamiliar words. Some think singing is required, although clear recitation also counts.
How to Assess It: Give each student two minutes to sing or recite the state song from memory. Mark word accuracy, line order, and completion on a three-item checklist.

Lesson moves

Print each line on a strip, then have pairs arrange the strips in order before practicing without them.
Ask students to write two sentences explaining which words show pride in Texas and why.
Play a missing-word game by covering selected words on a projected lyric sheet as the class recites.
Have students plan when the state song could be performed at a school assembly, civic ceremony, or Texas celebration.
