What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify why major Texas and U.S. founding documents were written and explain why each still matters. They describe how Texas government divides lawmaking, enforcement, and interpretation among three branches. They also explain key ideas about independence, limited government, and individual rights.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can match each document to its purpose and explain its importance with a specific example. They can name each branch, describe its basic function, and connect rights or freedoms to the correct founding document.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse the Texas Declaration of Independence with the U.S. Declaration of Independence, or treat constitutions as lists of rights only. They may also think the governor makes laws alone or that courts enforce laws.

How to Assess It

Give students an exit ticket with three prompts: name one document and its purpose, explain one protected right, and match each branch to its function.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs excerpt cards from five founding documents, then have them match each excerpt to its document, purpose, and importance.

  2. Ask students to write: Which document most directly protects individual freedom, and what phrase or idea supports your answer?

  3. Run a three-branch sorting relay with cards such as passes laws, enforces laws, and decides whether laws follow the constitution.

  4. Use a recent Texas law to trace how legislators, the governor, and courts may each take a different action.
