What Students Need to Do

Students place Texas history eras in chronological order and summarize what changed in each period. They connect landmark dates to events and explain how era labels help organize a long, complex past.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a blank timeline, students correctly order the eras and place major dates within them. They describe each era with specific people, events, economic changes, or political shifts and justify where divisions belong.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat era boundaries as exact breaks, even though change often happens gradually. They often confuse Mexican independence in 1821, Texas independence in 1836, and annexation in 1845. They may also mistake 1901 as the first use of oil rather than the start of a major oil boom.

How to Assess It

On an exit ticket, have students order 1519, 1836, 1845, and 1901, name the era for each, and explain why one date marks change.

   Give pairs era, date, and event cards to arrange on butcher paper, then add one defining feature beneath each era.

   Ask students to write which era boundary best represents a turning point and defend their choice with two facts.
