What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name nonprofit and civic groups in their community or beyond. They describe what each group does and how its work helps people share a safer, healthier community.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify groups such as the Red Cross, a food bank, or a neighborhood association. The student can connect each group’s services to a clear community benefit.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every group that helps people is a government agency. They may think nonprofits cannot collect money. They may also think the common good means every person receives the same direct help.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Name one nonprofit or civic organization, describe one service it provides, and explain how that service helps the community.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give pairs organization cards and community need cards, then have them match each group to a need and explain each match.
Ask, “How does helping one family after a fire help the whole community?” Students discuss, then write a three-sentence response.
Play Common Good Match: teams pair organization names with service cards and earn a point only after giving an accurate explanation.
Open a local food bank website, find two listed services, and connect each service to a community need.
