What Students Need to Do: Students connect a named resident, leader, group, or major event to a change in their town or neighborhood. They explain what changed using a photo, map, artifact, or short source.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly identify who or what caused a local change. They describe the community before and after, then point to evidence that supports the connection.
Common Misconceptions: Students may name a famous national figure without explaining a local connection. They may list dates or facts but not explain what changed, or confuse something that happened earlier with its cause.
How to Assess It: Give students one local source from the lesson. Ask: “Who or what affected the community, what changed, and what detail from the source proves it?”

Lesson moves

Give pairs old and current community photos; have them label three changes and attach each change to a person, group, or event.
Write: Who or what changed our community, what was different afterward, and which source supports your answer?
Play cause-and-effect match: students pair local person and event cards with change cards, then justify one match aloud.
Mark a nearby park, road, or building on a map, then research whose decision or which event shaped that place.
