What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students name Amelia Earhart, George Washington Carver, and other people known for acting independently or developing new ideas. They connect a specific choice, achievement, or solution to individualism or inventiveness.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can identify each person from a short description or image. The student gives one accurate example of what the person did and explains which trait it shows.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat individualism as being selfish or working completely alone. They may call any accomplishment an invention, confuse Earhart with an airplane inventor, or claim Carver invented peanut butter.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Choose Amelia Earhart or George Washington Carver, name one action that showed individualism or inventiveness, and explain your choice in one sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups cups, craft sticks, and tape to design a pencil carrier, then label one independent choice and one inventive feature.

  2. Ask, “Which action better shows individualism: Earhart flying solo across the Atlantic or Carver pursuing new research questions? Explain with one detail.”

  3. Play a card match with person cards, action cards, and trait cards; students keep a set only after explaining the match.

  4. Have students choose a classroom tool, name the problem it solves, and describe how its creator likely used an original idea.
